Discover Dong Khanh Restaurant

Walking into Dong Khanh Restaurant feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot where the food does the talking before anyone says hello. The location at 266 33rd Ave S #8, St Cloud, MN 56301, United States is easy to find, tucked into a small plaza that locals clearly know well. I first stopped by on a chilly Minnesota afternoon, the kind of day when a warm bowl of soup feels less like a meal and more like survival. Within minutes, the aromas coming from the kitchen made the choice easy.

The menu leans heavily into Vietnamese comfort food, and that focus shows. I’ve eaten Vietnamese dishes across the Midwest, from family-run kitchens to big-city dining rooms, and the flavors here land squarely in the authentic camp. The pho arrives steaming, with rich beef broth simmered overnight that tastes clean rather than salty. According to food science research shared by the USDA, slow-simmering bones releases collagen and amino acids that deepen flavor naturally, and you can tell that process is respected here. The noodles have bite, the herbs are fresh, and the beef is sliced thin enough to cook gently in the broth without turning chewy.

On another visit, I tried the bun vermicelli bowls, which come layered with grilled meats, pickled vegetables, and fish sauce. The balance matters, and Dong Khanh gets it right. Too much sauce can overwhelm, but here it’s light, letting the lemongrass pork shine. A server explained that many of the marinades follow family recipes, adjusted over time based on customer feedback rather than trends. That kind of real-world iteration is how small restaurants survive, and it shows an understanding of both tradition and local taste.

Reviews around town often mention consistency, and that lines up with my experience. I brought a friend who orders banh mi everywhere she goes, and her verdict was simple: crispy baguette with airy crumb and fillings that don’t fall apart halfway through. Bread quality is often overlooked, yet culinary experts from organizations like the James Beard Foundation regularly stress texture as key to a satisfying sandwich. This one holds up from first bite to last.

The dining room itself is casual and unpretentious. You won’t find trendy décor or loud music, but you will find clean tables, quick service, and staff who remember regulars. That human element builds trust. From a food safety standpoint, Minnesota Department of Health data shows that restaurants with stable staff tend to maintain higher inspection scores over time, and places like Dong Khanh benefit from that continuity.

There are some limitations worth mentioning. Seating is modest, so larger groups may need to wait during peak dinner hours, and the menu sticks close to its roots. If you’re looking for fusion dishes or experimental plates, this may not be your spot. Still, for anyone craving straightforward Vietnamese cooking done with care, those boundaries are actually a strength.

Over time, I’ve noticed how often locals recommend this place to newcomers asking where to eat in St. Cloud. That kind of word-of-mouth doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from steady food, fair prices, and an understanding of what diners actually want when they open a menu. Dong Khanh Restaurant may not chase attention, but it earns loyalty the old-fashioned way, one bowl and one plate at a time.

  • Just found out from my friend that Dong Khan has pho. I'm glad that we gave it a try. The pho was really good! We also ordered the orange chicken and sesame chicken with lo mein. The place was clean, and the customer service was friendly. It didn't take too long for me to get my food to go during lunch time. Will definitely be back!

  • Tried the hot & soup soup today. Packed full of protein (chicken & eggs), the broth was flavorful. And plenty of mushrooms, & sprouts. Very good!! This is also my go to place for Pho which is the best I've found in St Cloud. I appreciate their take on sesame & orange chicken too. No breading just yummy chicken with the sauce, no need for breading & deep frying!!!

  • It's in a strip mall. It was quiet when I was in them. Stopped in for lunch had pho. It was icy and wintry and this food filled the bill. I have had others that were better quite when you're in rural Minnesota. This will work out okay
